Pianist and composer Robert Mitchell draws on a vast palette of ideas and influences. Yet, listen to any one of his six records, including his latest CD The Cusp (EDITION), and you will hear the pure sound of a man’s personal aesthetic. Ask what his ambition is and Mitchell will tell you that it is ‘for the processes of writing, rehearsal, performing and recording to merge into one constant, high-level stream of activity.’
To date, his activities have involved collaborations with Cuban violinist Omar Puente, saxophonist Julian Siegal and vibraphonist Corey Mwamba. He has worked with Courtney Pine, Steve Coleman, Norma Winstone (on the Shorter Stories project), Greg Osby, Matana Roberts and Yolanda Charles amongst many others. An amazingly accomplished pianist and improviser, Mitchell curated the LIFTING THE LID festival at London’s Pizza Express featuring Bheki Mseleku, John Taylor, Django Bates, John Escreet, Zoe Rahman and Mitchell himself in solo performance.

Robert Mitchell has been nominated for numerous awards, including twice for both the BBC Jazz Awards and the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award (Composition). In 2009 his CD with his group 3io The Greater Good with his group 3io won ‘Best Jazz Album’ in the prestigious Gilles Peterson Worldwide awards. Mitchell has been a Steinway Artist since 2009, adding his name to the historic roster that includes Daniel Barenboim, Geri Allen, Billy Taylor, McCoy Tyner, Arthur Rubenstein and our own Joanna MacGregor and Julian Joseph.
Perhaps closest to his heart, however, is his Panacea project. It is this ensemble that has allowed him to explore his interest in the song form within jazz and contemporary soul music. Panacea makes music that is articulate and authoritative – music for grown-ups, who demand to be challenged
