“The group build expectations with patience and precision, from quiet, dripping-water motifs propelled by soft mallet sounds that swell and recede, to folksy Mehldau-like themes that release flows of Jarrett-like inventiveness, or hip Cuban groovers”. GUARDIAN ****

In 2005 pianist and composer Andrew McCormack released Telescope, an album that received huge critical acclaim from national press and placed him firmly on the UK jazz scene as one of the major players. Together with bassist Tom Herbert and drummer Tom Skinner, this trio developed a formidable reputation as one of the new leading piano trios in the UK for their adventurous and engaging music and post-bop sound. Since then he has channelled his time and energy into establishing a hugely successful duo project with saxophonist Jason Yarde, with which they have released two albums, as well as working as a regular sideman with artists including Kyle Eastwood and Denys Baptiste.

McCormack is intent in perfecting his craft and over the last few years has dedicated many hours, coincided with a gradual move to New York City, to the pursuit of excellence in his playing and musicianship. With Live in London, it’s not only a celebration of a newly formed trio but a showcase of a man at the peak of his game as a composer and performer. Recorded at the 606 Jazz Club in London, this album, released only as a live digital album and video, is bursting with energy and ideas. McCormack is a bold and compelling improviser and there’s an exuberance and confidence in his playing and as a bandleader that puts this trio right at top. It is fresh and engaging and one that is building momentum quickly with the inclusion of some very impressive sidemen in bassist Chris Hill and drummer Troy Miller. But, this album is about McCormack – a process of self-discovery for McCormack to develop a new band with new ideas. With plans already firing for a studio album, it won’t be long before another piano trio will be forcing their way into the limelight.
